Cubs Add Codi Heuer to Active Roster After Trade With White Sox

Cubs next chapter starts with Heuer's arrival vs. Nats originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

It won't be long before we start to see what the Cubs got back in a flurry of moves made before Friday's trade deadline.

The Cubs added reliever Codi Heuer to the 26-man roster before Saturday's game against the Nationals.

Heuer, acquired with Nick Madrigal from the White Sox in exchange for Craig Kimbrel, is available out of the bullpen Saturday.

Heuer and Madrigal are the only two players the Cubs acquired in over a half dozen trades before Friday's deadline with big-league experience. Madrigal is out for the season with a torn right hamstring.

Heuer had a strong 2020 debut season, turning in a 1.52 ERA in 21 relief appearances, striking out 25 in 23 2/3 innings. He's had a tougher go around this season, holding a 5.12 ERA in 40 appearances.

The White Sox were high on the right-hander with upper-90s fastball velocity. Former teammate Aaron Bummer billed him as a potential future closer.

Of course, the Cubs have a vacancy in that role with the trade of Kimbrel, and other high-leverage arms in Andrew Chafin and Ryan Tepera.

Heuer will wear jersey No. 12, last donned by Kyle Schwarber in 2020.
