Coby White Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, to Be Evaluated in 4 Months

White undergoes shoulder surgery, to be evaluated in 4 months originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Bulls announced Thursday that Coby White underwent left shoulder surgery to repair an injury sustained over the weekend while "engaged in basketball activities away from the team."

The update came with a re-evaluation timeline — which, it should be noted, is not synonymous with return timeline — of four months, meaning mid-October. Training camps for the 2021-22 season begin Sept. 28, and the regular season tips off Oct. 19, The Athletic reported Thursday.

So entering a crucial third season, White will spend the offseason rehabilitating and likely be evaluated during training camp, an unfortunate development. After making All-Rookie second team in his first year, White started 54 of his 69 appearances in 2020-21, averaging 15.1 points, 4.8 assists and shooting 35.9 percent from 3-point range.

Especially encouraging were White's final 18 games following his reinsertion into the starting lineup after being moved to a bench role in March. He averaged 17.6 points and 5.9 assists down the stretch, showing improvements in his decision-making and consistency as a jump-shooter.

White, who often points to his durability as a point of pride, has missed just three games across his first two NBA seasons.

Asked about White's growth at his end-of-season press conference, Artūras Karnišovas pointed to ups and downs, but also growth in the face of adversity while manning the point guard spot full-time for the first time in his basketball life.

Still, the Bulls are widely reported to be in the market for point guard help this offseason. White's uncertain status should only add to that noise.
