Chicago Sky Unveil Three New Uniforms Ahead of 2021 WNBA Season

Sky unveil three new uniform sets, and each have own story originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

As part of a leaguewide celebration the WNBA's 25th season, the Chicago Sky unveiled three new game uniform sets Thursday afternoon: the WNBA Nike Heroine Edition, the WNBA Nike Explorer Edition and the WNBA Nike Rebel Edition.

They're sharp to the eye, and each have their own backstory.

"I'm very excited about our new jerseys this season," Sky center Stefanie Dolson said in a statement. "Nike did an incredible job of representing this beautiful city of Chicago with cool designs and patterns and the first couldn't be more perfect."

Heroine Edition, Explorer Edition

Both the Heroine and Explorer Edition threads bear pinstripes. According to a release, those pinstripes are allusions to women’s power suits and the Chicago skyline, which is littered with skyscrapers and famous for its fog (each pinstripe fades on its ascent before stopping short of the jersey's letterhead).

"This is the first time in league history that uniforms have represented the city that they are in," Sky head coach and general manager James Wade said in a statement. "Pinstripes are something that run deep in Chicago culture. It's been 60-some years that pinstripes have represented our great city -- starting with the Cubs, White Sox and then the Bulls -- and now we are able to continue to carry on that legacy."

Rebel Edition

The electric blue Rebel edition uniforms, punctuated by shattered-glass lines, carry meaning intrinsic to WNBA itself, as well as a reference to the Sky's name.

"I remember saying last year that we didn't have a ceiling because we were the Sky, and the blue uniforms represent that -- as you can see on the design," Wade said. "It's a glass ceiling that is breaking, and that's what we'll try to live up to every night."

All three designs go on sale at the Sky's online retail store on April 14.
