Bulls Legend Michael Jordan Announces Team Name, Number With NASCAR Venture

Jordan pays homage to Bulls years with NASCAR team name originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The only way NASCAR's announcement would have been more fitting is if the racing body waited a day.

After all, Friday is Oct. 23.

Otherwise, everything about Thursday's unveiling of Michael Jordan's team name and number for his NASCAR venture with driver Denny Hamlin seemed fitting and familiar.

The team name is 23XI. The number is 23.

Jordan, of course, famously donned No. 23 as he led the Bulls to six NBA titles during the 1990s in one of the most impactful dynasties in sports history. The team name is pronounced "twenty-three eleven" and also recognizes the car number that Hamlin has sported throughout his Cup series driving career.

"Michael and I have a shared vision for this team,” Hamlin said in a team release, “so it’s exciting to see it reflected in the team name and on the race car with the iconic number 23 that Michael made famous."

NASCAR's news release also said other details, such as manufacturer affiliation, will be announced before the new venture's debut at Daytona Speedweeks in February 2021.

In other words, stay tuned.
