Bears Reportedly Looking at Two In-House Candidates for DC Opening

Report: Bears looking at two in-house candidates for DC originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

It didn't take long for details of the Bears' defensive coordinator search to surface.

On Friday morning, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport tweeted a few small details regarding the team's effort to replace Chuck Pagano, who announced his retirement earlier this week:

So that's what contract clarity looks like. Desai has been with the Bears since 2013, when he came on as a Quality Control assistant. He spent five seasons in that position before being promoted to safeties coach in 2019. The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs also alluded to the idea that Desai was one of the frontrunners in the team's search. Desai – who also holds a doctorate in educational administration from Temple University – is well-liked within the organization, as evident by the team's decision to block Vic Fangio's attempts to hire him as a coach in Denver.

Rodgers joined the Bears in 2015 as the defensive line coach after spending the previous two years in the same position for the Denver Broncos. Interestingly enough, the vast majority of Rodgers' jobs have been on the other side of the ball – he spent the first decade of his coaching career in various offensive positions for colleges like LSU, Missouri State, Stephen F. Austin, and Iowa State. His work with lower-profile guys like Bilal Nichols, Roy Robertson-Harris, Nick Williams, and Brent Urban (among others) earned him a reputation as one of the best defensive line coaches in football.
