Bears' Justin Fields Has Never Lost Like This, But He's Not Mad

Fields on Bears' bad losses: 'I don’t know how to feel' originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Justin Fields is not used to this. He played winning football in high school and winning football at Ohio State. Sure, there were some tough losses along the way, but nothing has compared to the way he and the Bears have lost this season.

“I don’t know how to feel,” Fields said after the game. “My only reaction to this is just to keep working.”

It would be easy for anyone to get angry after another game of complete offensive ineptitude. Sunday’s game against the Bucs wasn’t as historically awful as Week 3 against the Browns, but it was still really, really bad. Despite that, Fields said several times he wasn’t angry at all with how the Bears played.

“At the end of the day, it happened,” Fields said. “We have bad days. Y’all have bad days. And y’all can either get depressed. Or y’all can get up the next day and go to work. And I think that’s what our team is going to do. And that’s what I’m going to do. I’m not angry at all. Ya know, just, s--- happens.”

While some may want to see a little fire out of their quarterback after a performance like this, the Bears seem to appreciate that Fields is the same guy in the huddle or on the sideline, no matter how they’re playing on the field.

“The guy responds to adversity well,” Roquan Smith said. “That goes back to the Cleveland game. He faced a lot of adversity throughout that, and then the following week, the guy responded in a great way. So I have a lot of confidence in the guy.”

Fields arguably had his best game of the season following the Bears’ embarrassing loss to the Browns, but he also had the benefit of going up against the Lions. Next week he won’t be as lucky, as the Bears take on the Steelers, who are much stingier defensively.

Still, the Bears have seen enough from Fields to be confident that he’ll be able to bounce back once again.

“What Justin has proven to us over the past several weeks is that, when he has something that he can learn from, he does it,” Matt Nagy said. “That's what's exciting for us, is knowing that. Every rep he gets and every defensive play he sees on the other side of the ball, he's gonna use that to make him better.

“When you go through times like this that are difficult, as a rookie, this kid here can handle it.”
