The rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals is as intense as any in baseball, but even Chicago fans have to feel bad for what happened to Cards catcher Yadier Molina.
During Saturday’s game between the two clubs, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant foul-tipped a 102 MPH pitch from Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks, and the ball bounced up and hit Molina in the groin.
Molina was immediately removed from the game and underwent emergency surgery on Saturday. The Cardinals say that he will be out for at least a month with what the team is calling a “pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma.”
Molina was placed on the 10-day disabled list after the game. He is hitting .272 with six home runs and 17 RBI this season.
“That was a bad one,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “It was hard to see.”
