Cubs Come Back to Beat Nationals in Game 3

The Chicago Cubs were no-hit through six innings, but they still came back and beat the Washington Nationals in Game 3 of the NLDS on Monday night.

Max Scherzer no-hit the Cubs through six innings, but Ben Zobrist broke up the no-hitter, and Albert Almora and Anthony Rizzo each picked up RBI hits to secure the win and the 2-1 series lead.

Max Scherzer was perfect through the first three innings of the game, but Jose Quintana matched him pitch for pitch. He got out of a few jams as well, including one in the second inning that ended when Anthony Rendon flew out to Jason Heyward to end the frame.

The Cubs got their first baserunner when Jon Jay was hit to lead off the fourth inning, and even after he was retired, Anthony Rizzo ended up on second base after a throwing error by Trea Turner. After Willson Contreras walked with two outs, Ben Zobrist grounded out on the first pitch to end the inning.

Unfortunately for the Cubs, errors dominated the narrative in the sixth inning. On a fly ball to right field by Daniel Murphy, Kyle Schwarber dropped what would have been the third out, and then Ryan Zimmerman drove him in to make it a 1-0 game.

The score remained 1-0 until the seventh inning, when Ben Zobrist broke up the no-hitter with a ringing double. Albert Almora Jr. then smacked a single into left field to drive him in, tying things up at 1-1.

Unfortunately, that's all the Cubs could get, as Jason Heyward was doubled off after Addison Russell flew out to Michael Taylor.

In the eighth inning, Jon Jay moved Leonys Martin over to second base with a bunt, and Rizzo came up to the plate with two outs and a runner on second. Rizzo lofted a high fly ball to center field, which bounced between three fielders and scored Martin to make it a 2-1 game.

Wade Davis came into the game in the ninth and slammed the door on the Nationals, giving the Cubs a 2-1 series lead.

Game 4 will take place on Tuesday at Wrigley Field, with Jake Arrieta taking the ball for the Cubs. The game will either start at 4:38 p.m. or 7:08 p.m., depending on the outcome of Game 3 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
