It was a big league debut to remember for Adbert Alzolay, as he got the win for the Chicago Cubs in a triumph over the New York Mets at Wrigley Field.
Alzolay, recalled Thursday by the team, came into the game in a relief role and pitched well, striking out five batters and giving up one run in four innings of work. Despite giving up a home run and a walk in the ninth, he still was credited with the victory as the Cubs won for the second straight night.
Tyler Chatwood allowed three runs in four innings, and Steve Cishek slammed the door on the Mets for the save.
Javier Báez blasted his 18th home run of the season in the seventh inning, and Anthony Rizzo knocked in his 52nd and 53rd runs of the season.
The Mets got on the board first in the game, as Carlos Gomez grounded into a second inning double play that scored the game’s first run. In the third inning, Pete Alonso blasted his 25th home run of the season into the bleachers, putting the Mets ahead by a 3-0 margin.
The Cubs roared back in the third inning, scoring six runs as they knocked the Mets back on their heels. Daniel Descalso and Kris Bryant both notched RBI singles, and then Rizzo smacked an RBI double to right to Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber.
Báez then laced a triple to deep center field, and ultimately scored on a wild pitch to put a capper on the barrage, giving the Cubs a 6-3 lead in the process.

From there, Chatwood and Alzolay largely kept the Mets at bay, and other than Todd Frazier’s solo home run in the ninth, the Cubs largely cruised to victory.
The Cubs and Mets will be back on the field Friday for the second game of a four-game set, with first pitch scheduled for 1:20 p.m. Yu Darvish will take the ball for the Cubs as they aim for their third straight win.
