ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Mike Singletary has accepted the position of head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Per Mort, Singletary’s agent is negotiating a contract with the team.

Singletary, a Hall of Fame middle linebacker who served as the cornerstone of the 1985 Bears, got into coaching with the Ravens in 2003.  In 2005, he accepted an offer from Nolan to join the Niners’ staff.

And now that Nolan is gone, Singletary is the successor.
