I don't know why this morning when I fired up my computer and starting surfing around my usual soccer sites and saw headlines that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo smashed up his Ferrari on the way to training Thursday morning that I thought of an exchange between former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis and HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant. A couple years ago in the wane of his career Lewis had fought somebody -- I think one of the Klitschko brothers -- and when the fight was stopped Lewis kept proclaiming to Merchant, "Look at the state of his face Larry."
Well, look at the picture on the right and the state of Ronaldo's totalted luxury vechicle and it's amazing the Portuguese start walked away without any injuries. (Women around the world would certainly be in tears had he mashed up his face.) In fact, it was reported he participated in training later that day. Is it possible that Ronaldo really is Superman...or some cyborg from the future sent back to destroy us with step-overs?
The question, now, since it was a one-car accident -- how fast was Ronaldo driving? Is he getting an early jump on the April release of 'Fast & Furious'? Perhaps a better movie to reference would be 'Somebody Up There Likes Me.'
