Ronaldo Nets Another Award

It's official, the 2007-08 season was one of the best in the history of the game. The Portuguese attacker took home another award today -- FIFA World Player of the Year (2008). This will sit nicely alongside his FIFPro Award and Ballon d'Or, assuming those were in the backseat of his Ferrari when he smashed it up last week.

What more can you really say about Ronaldo year which hasn't already been written? If anything, after a blistering start to 2008, which saw him lead Manchester United to both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles, he cooled off a little bit at Euro 2008 and then hurt his ankle thus limiting his debut in the new season.

Perhaps instead of re-hashing the greatness of Ronaldo, let's speculate who'll be smiling alongside the trophy this time in 2010. At this early stage the race for world's best player seems completely wide open. The extremely early front runners could be either Samuel Eto'o or Lionel Messi from Barcelona, as the club is the odds makers favorite to win the Champions League and is currently in first place in La Liga. If Liverpool are able to fend off Manchester United for the Premier League title, Steven Gerrard would leap toward the top of the list. Suffice to say, without any major international tournaments, it won't be a slam dunk like Ronaldo this past season.
