Left on Base: Grand Theft Jeter and Other Lingering Items

Left on Base is MLB FanHouse's link dump.

Derek Jeter now we know what he took

It is now in Jeter's possession. Bravo, Mr. November.

* Mike Sweeney has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. He's only going to be 35, but he hasn't been productive since 2005 and hasn't played more than 130 games since 2001.

* Sidney Ponson will anchor the starting rotation for the Netherlands in the WBC. Playing anchor is definitely a good role for him.

* The Diamondbacks and exploring the option of signing Tom Gordon. Apparently, they couldn't persuade Randy Myers to come out of retirement.

* Rich Hill of the Cubs is on the trading block. He's out of options and has fallen out of favor with Jim Hendry and Lou Pinella. He had a solid 2007 season, and he's only going to be 29 this season, so he's a good candidate to thrive with a change of scenery.

* The Pirates have given Paul Maholm a three-year contract extension, which also includes a club option for the fourth year. Maholm had a good season last year, and he's only gonna be 27 this year.

* The Orioles are showing interest in Braden Looper. He'd certainly better their staff, but that doesn't mean it would make them competitive in the AL East.
