All Arshavin, All the Time

If you're like me and watched last year's Euro 2008 in June, you couldn't help but walk away completely blown away by Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin. After his blinding display against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, who didn't want the the maestro playing for their favorite club when the new season began in August? This was going to be the biggest move involving Russia since the fall of communism and or the defection of Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Fast forward seven months and I'm personally at Arshavin fatigue. All summer we read as he flirted with Premier League teams, namely Tottenham, and then with Barcelona his 'dream club' followed by Real Madrid and then with Bayern Munich and just about every major club in Western Europe.

It was as if he were inspired by Russian tsar Peter the Great's obession with a warm-water Western port for his empire. (Fittingly, this became St. Peterburg, the home to Arshavin's current club, Zenit.)
