Jimenez, Caratini Homer as Cubs and White Sox Play to a Tie

The Chicago Cubs and White Sox faced off for the second time so far this spring, and the crosstown rivals played to a 4-4 draw at Sloan Park.

Victor Caratini and Cael Brockmeyer both went deep for the Cubs, and Eloy Jimenez hit a home run for the White Sox as the two teams finished their game in a tie.

Both starting pitchers in the game had strong performances, as Kyle Hendricks struck out seven batters and allowed two earned runs in four innings. Meanwhile, Lucas Giolito struck out eight in four innings while giving up one earned run against the Cubs.

The Cubs were clinging to a 3-2 lead going into the top of the eighth inning when Jimenez, a former prospect traded to the White Sox in exchange for Jose Quintana last summer, launched a two-run home run over the center field fence to put the Sox ahead by a 4-3 margin.

Fortunately for the Cubs, they were able to tie things up in the bottom of the ninth, as Brockmeyer drove a fastball over the fence to knot the game at 4-4, and that’s where it would end as the teams opted to end the game after nine innings.

News and Notes:

-Jimenez, who had missed time with left knee tendinitis for the White Sox, wasn’t scheduled to play Saturday, but after expressing his desire to go up against his former team, Sox manager Rick Renteria allowed him an at-bat, and he repaid him with a home run.

Chicago White Sox Report to Spring Training

-Carl Edwards Jr. and Nate Jones both pitched scoreless innings of relief for their respective teams as they tune up for the regular season. Jones could get some time pitching for the White Sox late in contests, and Edwards will likely open the year as either the seventh or eighth inning pitcher for the Cubs.

-Mike Freeman went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in the game, but is still hitting an even .500 this spring.

-Yolmer Sanchez continued his solid spring, with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He also drove in his fifth RBI of the Cactus League slate.

-Luis Robert will miss the remainder of spring training after suffering a strained ligament in his left thumb. Despite the injury, suffered in Wednesday’s game, Robert still managed to slug a grand slam later in the game.

What’s Next:

The Cubs will play the Los Angeles Dodgers in a split-squad game on Saturday night, and will then head across Mesa to HoHoKam Stadium to take on the Oakland A’s. Luke Farrell will start for the Cubs against the Dodgers, and Yu Darvish will make his second spring start against the A’s Sunday.

For the White Sox, they will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks at Camelback Ranch. Reynaldo Lopez will go up against Patrick Corbin in the contest.
