White Sox Officially Sign Jon Jay to 1-Year Deal

Jay hit seven triples last season for the Royals and Diamondbacks

The Chicago White Sox have once again dipped their toes into the free agency pool, signing outfielder Jon Jay to a one-year contract.

Jay, who played for the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks last season, batted .268 with 19 doubles, three home runs, and 40 RBI for the clubs. He also scored 74 runs and hit a career-high seven triples.

“Jon is a veteran major leaguer who can help a team win in any number of ways,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. “From getting on base consistently, to being a solid hitter, smart baserunner and solid defender at all three outfield spots, Jon makes any team better.”

To make room for Jay, the White Sox designated outfielder Charlie Tilson for assignment.

Jay is good friends with free agent infielder Manny Machado, often training together with the superstar in Miami. This is the second time the White Sox have acquired a player with Machado connections, after trading for Yonder Alsonso, Machado’s brother-in-law, earlier this offseason.
