Bryce Harper Sign at United Center Sets Social Media Ablaze

Harper is one of the most hotly sought after free agents of all time

It’s been widely assumed that the Chicago Cubs would be a top contender to ink free agent superstar Bryce Harper, but the Chicago White Sox may have something to say about that.

Harper, who could potentially become the highest paid free agent in the history of professional sports, is commanding a lot of interest, and on Thursday, this image was posted on Twitter suggesting that the White Sox could be in that mix:

While it’s unlikely that the marquee would already be set up to announce a signing, it’s entirely possible that the team is using it as part of a promotional video to land the superstar, much like the Cubs did with players like Jon Lester and Jason Heyward.

It isn't clear whether the sign was a real part of a push of course, but there is one other thing for White Sox fans to consider. In late October, White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech, who currently wears the number 34 for the team, posted this Instagram photo, and the caption may be of interest to Sox fans:

“Given the opportunity, I will always wear my number with pride, whether that number is 34 or not,” he said.

Kopech will miss the 2019 season for the White Sox after having Tommy John Surgery, but it's entirely possible the team asked his permission to offer Harper his uniform number in a free agency push.

It’s not clear how much money Harper will command in free agency, but he has reportedly already turned down a 10-year, $300 million deal from the Washington Nationals, so that will likely be a starting point for the star outfielder.
