Lovie Smith Talks Coaching, Free Agents

Smith said he looks fondly on his memories of coaching the Bears and the strong relationships he developed with several players

Lovie Smith may be moving on from coaching the Chicago Bears, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t coach Bears players again.

With free agents in Chicago like cornerback Charles Tillman questioning a future with the Chicago Bears, there’s a possibility that some could end up under the coaching prowess of Smith with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“When I was a head coach in Chicago I got a chance to coach some great players there, and not just on the defensive side but offense, defense and special teams,” he said. “Any way we can improve our ball club we’ll look at all avenues to do that.”

Smith said he looks fondly on his memories of coaching the Bears and the strong relationships he developed with several players.

“I had a great nine years in Chicago, being in Chicago allowed me an opportunity to go to Tampa,” he said. “Every place I’ve been I’ve learned something from that experience, the Chicago Bears are no different.”

But after taking some time away from coaching, Smith said he’s ready to get back into the game.

“I loved my time off, but late in the year of course I started seeing how much I missed the game and couldn’t wait to get back on the sideline,” he said. “I didn’t know that I would end up getting my dream job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s pretty exciting.”
