Brewers Ink Yasmani Grandal to a 1-Year Contract

Another Chicago Cubs rival made a big splash in free agency on Wednesday, as the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a one-year deal with catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Grandal, who hit 24 home runs and drove in 68 RBI for the Los Angeles Dodgers next season, will get paid just over $18 million this season, and provides an instant upgrade to the Brewers’ offense.

The move is just the latest made by the Cubs’ divisional rivals as the offseason continues. The St. Louis Cardinals have been busy, trading for former Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and signing reliever Andrew Miller to a two-year contract.

The Cincinnati Reds also acquired outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig from the Dodgers, and the Pirates signed outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall to a one year deal.

The Cubs have made a few moves, picking up pitcher Cole Hamels’ contract option and signing infielder Daniel Descalso to a contract, but have not made any big splashes after losing in the National League Wild Card Game last season.
