Chicago Cubs Get Good, Bad News on Injury Front

The Chicago Cubs could be getting back some key contributors down the stretch, as several players are nearing a return to the roster.

On Wednesday, relief pitcher Brandon Morrow threw 35 pitches before the Cubs’ game against the Milwaukee Brewers, and said that he expects to rejoin the team when they return from Arizona next week.

Morrow, who has been out since mid-July with shoulder discomfort, said that he felt good after the session, and is hoping to be available to pitch for the Cubs by the time they return to Chicago for a crosstown series against the White Sox.

During a radio interview on Wednesday, Cubs President Theo Epstein also provided an update on outfielder Jason Heyward, who has been dealing with a hamstring issue. The Cubs believe that Heyward could return to the field as soon as next week, according to Epstein, but they still haven’t put a definitive timetable on his comeback.

After raising over $11,000 for Special Olympics, an incredible young man’s lifelong dream came true as he sang the national anthem Monday before a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field. Trina Orlando reports.

Finally, outfielder Kyle Schwarber will not travel with the team to Washington D.C. for their makeup game Thursday against the Washington Nationals, as he is dealing with a back issue. Schwarber has not played in the Cubs’ last two games against the Brewers, but could be available Friday when the team starts a series against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs made one other announcement, telling reporters that pitcher Yu Darvish underwent an arthroscopic debridement on his pitching elbow on Wednesday. Darvish, who has been out since May due to discomfort in his elbow, should be ready for spring training, the team announced.

The Cubs currently have a two game lead in the National League Central as they prepare to take on the Brewers Wednesday night.
