Chicago Cubs Finish Off Sweep of Cardinals Behind Strong Kyle Hendricks Outing

The Cubs have now swept the Cardinals twice this season at the Friendly Confines

For the second time this season, the Chicago Cubs have swept the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field thanks to big nights from Kyle Hendricks and Kyle Schwarber.

Hendricks pitched seven strong innings for the Cubs, giving up one earned run and striking out three batters. The hurler picked up his seventh win of the season in the triumph, and lowered his season ERA to 3.00.

Schwarber ripped an RBI double in the game and drove in a pair of runs as he continued his recent run of torrid play in the lead-off spot. He also scored a run for the Cubs as they finished off a 6-1 homestand.

Carlos González hit his first home run as a Cub in the game.

Facing Adam Wainwright for the second time in a week, the Cubs got off to a strong early start, as Anthony Rizzo grounded into an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning.

The Cardinals did manage to strand Kris Bryant at third base in that frame, and responded with a game-tying run in the second as Kolten Wong doubled in Marcel Ozuna to knot things up at 1-1.

That would remain the score until the fifth as the Cubs chased Wainwright from the game. David Bote ripped an RBi single to center field, and he would later score on a Schwarber double into the right field gap to give the Cubs a 3-1 advantage.

Chicago would add to its lead in the seventh and eighth innings, as Schwarber registered another RBI single and González homered into the basket in left field, extending the Cubs' advantage to four runs.

After jumping back into a tie for first place with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs will start a seven game road trip on Monday with a showdown with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Yu Darvish will take the ball for the Cubs as they face the Rockies for the second time in a week.
