Bulls Expected to Sign Point Guard DJ Augustin

Recently waived by the Toronto Raptors, Augustin could help alleviate the Bulls backcourt struggles

The Chicago Bulls have been in desperate need of point guard help with the injury to Derrick Rose, the recent struggles of Kirk Hinrich, Marquis Teague still not at a point where he can effectively contribute and veteran Mike James still recovering from a sprained MCL.

But help may be on the way in the form of DJ Augustin who was recently waived by the Toronto Raptors in the aftermath of a trade that sent Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings. The six-year veteran is expected to sign with Chicago after he clears waivers on Wednesday.

Augustin played sparingly with the Raptors this season, appearing in just 10 games and averaging just 2.1 points on 29 percent shooting from the field and .091 percent from behind the three-point line. But those numbers don’t reflect on the type of player he his.

For his career, the former University of Texas point guard owns averages of 9.4 points and 3.9 assists, while shooting 40 percent from the field and 37 percent from the three-point line. His best season came in 2010-11 with the Charlotte Bobcats where he averaged 14.4 points while starting all 82 games.

The addition of Augustin gives the Bulls the option of waiving Mike James or sending Marquis Teague down to the D-League.
