Chicago Bears Lose to the New Orleans Saints 30-13

Any momentum started by the Bears in their season-opening win over the Atlanta Falcons was stymied as the Bears fell to the New Orleans Saints, 30-13 at the Superdome on Sunday. Jay Cutler finished 19-45 for 244 yards and was sacked six times.

The Bears offense started well, as the team was down just three points at the half. Cutler and Forte led the offense on a long drive that ended in a touchdown early in the game, but they were quiet until the end of the half. The two combined for a march up the field after a two-minute warning, with Forte busting loose for four separate runs and Cutler running for a 17-yard first down. That put Robbie Gould in position to kick a 42-yard field goal.

The Bears managed one more field goal, but that was the end of scoring for the game. The Saints defense suffocated the Bears, completely stopping the running game and sacking Cutler six times. Starting tackle Gabe Carimi left with a knee injury. Frank Omiyale filled in and could not keep Cutler upright.

The Bears were clearly affected by their lack of depth in the secondary, as Chris Conte and Major Wright got tangled up as Saints QB Drew Brees hit Devery Henderson for a 79-yard touchdown. Later, Major Wright left the game with a head injury, which hurt the defense even more.

In the second half, the Saints took advantage of a Cutler fumble, as Brees hit a completely uncovered Meachem for a touchdown. Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram ran all over the Bears D. The Saints picked up 382 yards of total offense.

Earl Bennett, Gabe Carimi and Major Wright left the game with injuries. Bennett went down with a chest injury after getting nailed by Roman Harper. Carimi injured his right knee. Wright's injury was a scary moment, as he was hit in the head by Jimmy Graham's leg. He laid stiff on the field for a few minutes, but walked off the field on his own.

Next week, the Bears will face Green Bay, the Super Bowl champions. They have plenty of work to do to get their offensive line ready, or expect a repeat of this week's game.
