Bears Sign Left Tackle Jermon Bushrod

Signing Bushrod puts the Bears' starting tackles, Gabe Carimi and J'Marcus Webb, on notice

That bright light coming from Chicago is not the sun peeking out after days of clouds. It's Jay Cutler's smile after the Bears signed a Pro Bowl offensive tackle.

Jermon Bushrod signed a five-year contract with Chicago on Tuesday, the first day of NFL free agency.

Bushrod has been with the New Orleans Saints since 2007. There, he played for current Bears' offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer. The left tackle is a two-time Pro Bowler.

Signing Bushrod puts the Bears' starting tackles, Gabe Carimi and J'Marcus Webb, on notice. They will have to work to keep their jobs. Carimi, the Bears' first-round pick in 2011 struggled last season. Webb improved on his blocking over the 2012 season, but still was the subject of many costly penalties.

It's the second big signing the Bears made on Tuesday. They also signed Martellus Bennett, a tight end who played for the Giants and Cowboys.
