White Sox, Jose Abreu Avoid Arbitration, Agree to 1-Year Deal

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a one-year, $10.825-million contract with first baseman Jose Abreu, avoiding arbitration, the team announced in a release Saturday.

Abreu batted .293 last season, racking up 25 home runs and 100 RBIs. With 32 doubles, Abreu became the first player in White Sox history to record his third consecutive season of 30-plus doubles, 25-plus home runs and 100-plus RBI to start his career.

Abreu is also just the seventh player in major league history to record at least 100 RBIs in each of his first three seasons, and his 91 home runs during that time are tied for 10th most by a player in his first three years.

Following the 2016 season, the 29-year-old opted out of the final three years of his contract to become arbitration eligible, after signing with the Sox as a free agent out of Cuba in October 2013.
