Dodgers Win Game 2, Tie Series at 1-1

The Los Angeles Dodgers only scored one run on Sunday night, but it was enough as Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen combined to shutout the Chicago Cubs 1-0.

Both pitchers had their A-plus stuff going in the first inning, with Kyle Hendricks taking the ball first. He struck out the first two batters he faced, and then he induced a weak groundout from Justin Turner to end the frame.

Clayton Kershaw then stepped on the hill and did the same thing. A weak groundout from Dexter Fowler started the frame, and then he struck out Kris Bryant and got Anthony Rizzo to fly out to keep the game scoreless.

That scoreless tie was abruptly broken in the second inning thanks to Adrian Gonzalez. The Dodgers slugger, who tied Game 1 on Saturday with an RBI single off of Aroldis Chapman, went the opposite way and hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.

Hendricks was able to get out of the inning without yielding any more damage, but he got in trouble again in the third. After getting two outs he yielded back-to-back walks, but he struck out Gonzalez to end the inning and end the threat.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cubs finally ended Kershaw's perfect game bid with back-to-back singles by Javier Baez and Willson Contreras. A potential rally was snuffed out however as Jason Heyward popped out to third base to keep the Dodgers ahead by a run.

The Dodgers threatened again in the sixth inning as Gonzalez and Josh Reddick both reached base, but Baez made another incredible defensive play to end the inning. On a soft line drive by Joc Pederson, Baez let the ball hit the Wrigley Field turf, and he ended up starting a 4-6-5-6 double play to end the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cubs got Rizzo on base to lead off, but Kershaw worked his way out of trouble. Baez hit a rocket to center field with two outs, but it was hauled in by Pederson to end the inning.

Kershaw was pulled from the game after seven innings, but the Cubs' bats continued to remain dormant. Contreras struck out for the first out, and after Heyward flew out to shallow right field, Miguel Montero struck out to end the inning and leave the Cubs needing a ninth inning comeback to try to win the game.

Jake Arrieta will take the hill on Tuesday night when the series shifts to Los Angeles for Game 3. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m.
