Cubs' John Lackey Hopes History Repeats Itself in Tuesday Start vs. Giants

The San Francisco Giants have developed a reputation as a team that will never die under manager Bruce Bochy, and that perception was reinforced on Monday night as they knocked off the Chicago Cubs 6-5 to stay alive in the National League Division Series.

During Bochy’s time at the helm in San Francisco, the Giants have won 10 consecutive games in which they’ve faced elimination, including two this postseason. The team won the National League wild card game by a 3-0 margin over the New York Mets, and they beat the Cubs on Monday to keep their season alive. [[393634811, C]]

In fact, the Giants have had so much postseason success in recent years that there is only one active pitcher who can say that he’s eliminated the team from the playoffs. Fortunately for the Cubs, that pitcher happens to be taking the mound against the Giants on Tuesday night, as John Lackey will look to do exactly what he did in Game 7 of the 2002 World Series.

Facing off with a Giants lineup that included Barry Bonds, Lackey pitched five innings and gave up one run as he helped the Los Angeles Angels to their first ever World Series title.

On Tuesday night, Lackey will take on the Giants at AT&T Park as he tries to replicate the magic from that game. The Giants were nearly done for on Monday, but a late rally in the 13th inning allowed them to beat the Cubs and keep their hopes alive that their dominance in even-numbered years will continue.

Opposing Lackey will be Giants pitcher Matt Moore, who has had an inconsistent year to say the least. He’s been walking more batters in recent months, with a 4.2 walks per nine innings rate that is a walk and a half higher than the rate he accumulated with the Tampa Bay Rays before being traded to San Francisco.
