The Chicago Cubs have reportedly met with pitcher Jake Arrieta, and manager Joe Maddon revealed some interesting news on the status of the negotiations between the two sides.

During an interview with the Spiegel and Parkins Show, Maddon said that he is kept in the loop about negotiations with players, but didn’t express much confidence in Arrieta returning to the North Side.

“Jake is probably gone,” Maddon said as he discussed the team’s offseason plans.

That news isn’t particularly surprising, given that Arrieta reportedly wants more years than the Cubs are willing to offer, but it’s still noteworthy coming directly from Maddon. Arrieta reportedly wants a six year deal, but the Cubs aren’t willing to go nearly that long, with some reports suggesting that they only want to give the pitcher a three or four year contract.

Maddon also provided a vague update on Wade Davis, saying that he doesn’t know “what’s up” with the free agent closer.

“Our guys are always looking to make things better,” he said. “If they (Arrieta and Davis) leave and they’re gone, we’re going to have to do something about it.”

Arrieta posted a 3.53 ERA and a 14-10 record in 30 starts for the Cubs last season, and is hitting free agency for the first time in his career. Davis meanwhile had a 4-2 record with 32 saves in 59 appearances a season ago.
