Baez, who is also expecting his first child with fiancée Irmarie Marquez, has been on a tear in the Cubs’ first two home games, cracking four home runs as he finds his groove this season.
The multi-home run games were the second and third of Baez’s career, and he set a new Cubs record in the process.
According to Cubs historian Ed Hartig and Baseball Reference’s Play Index, Baez is the first player ever to have back-to-back multi-home run games while playing second base for the Cubs. He is also the only middle infielder to accomplish the feat, according to Hartig.
Baez’s first career two-home run game came in his debut season in 2014, when he accomplished the feat in just his third big league game.
Baez has four home runs and 10 RBI this season, and already has a pair of triples in just 35 at-bats. He will go for his third straight big game on Thursday when the Cubs wrap up their series against the division-leading Pirates.
