Unbeaten streaks are part of the game in spring training, and the Chicago Cubs are now unbeaten in their last seven games after playing to a 2-2 tie against the Colorado Rockies.

The Cubs’ lone runs were driven in by lead-off hitter Ian Happ, who continues to hit the ball hard. From the right side of the plate, Happ launched a two-run homer over the left field fence to drive in Mike Freeman and give the team a 2-0 lead.

Starting in place of Yu Darvish, who was scratched from his start with a stomach ailment, Alec Mills pitched two innings of strong ball, striking out three batters for the Cubs.

Unfortunately for Chicago, they could never add to their lead, and Colorado ultimately took advantage, as Sam Hilliard launched a two run homer to tie the game in the eighth inning.

The Cubs couldn’t break the tie, and ultimately had to settle for a draw against the Rockies.

Only a handful of the Cubs’ regulars played in the game, including catcher Willson Contreras, who went 1-for-2 with a single, and Tommy La Stella, who went 0-for-3 with a runner left on base.

For Colorado, DJ LeMahieu went 2-for-3, and Nolan Arenado went 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts.

News and Notes:

-Kris Bryant missed his fourth straight game as he continues to recover from a stomach ailment that forced him to be scratched from the team’s lineup over the weekend.

-After going 2-for-3 in a win over the San Francisco Giants, Kyle Schwarber has gone hitless in his last two games. He did have two walks against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, but he went 0-for-3 with a pair of punchouts against Colorado on Thursday afternoon.

Schwarber is batting .250 in eight at-bats so far this spring.

-Brian Duensing bounced back nicely from a rough first spring outing, striking out a pair of batters and giving up zero hits in a scoreless inning of work. In his first appearance, he gave up a pair of home runs and four earned runs in a game against the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

What’s Next:

The Cubs will next take the field on Friday afternoon as they head to Tempe to take on the Los Angeles Angels. Unfortunately for fans, top prospect Shoehei Otani will not appear for the Angels, and will instead play in a B-game at the team’s complex.

The Cubs will then head back home on Saturday to battle the Cincinnati Reds in Mesa. That game will air on 670 the Score.
