Hampton, Chicago 6 to raise funds for Steve McMichael originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Former Chicago Bear Dan Hampton and his band the Chicago 6 are raising funds Saturday to help teammate Steve "Mongo" McMichael and his battle with ALS.

McMichael, who played with Hampton from 1981-90 and won Super Bowl XX, was first diagnosed with ALS in January by the Mayo Clinic. He's also a band member of the Chicago 6 along with former linebacker Otis Wilson.

Although McMichael will not be able to play, Hampton, Wilson and additional band members will revive the Chicago 6 Saturday at McMichael's restaurant, Mongo McMichaels, in Romeoville from 3-8 p.m.

"Steve was a huge part of the band for 8 years," Hampton said in a statement, according to the Chicago Tribune. "He can no longer be a part of it. We felt compelled to pay a tribute to him."

Hampton and McMichael have shared their love of music since 2013 in the Chicago 6. Hampton fronts the band and also plays bass with McMichael accompanying on vocals and the occasional tambourine. Wilson has been known to sing, too.

The band plays hit songs like "Sweet Home Chicago" and "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" by Hank Williams Jr.

There is no entry fee for the event, but organizers are asking for a donation of $20 per person to go toward McMichael's ALS care. The band is scheduled to play at 4 p.m.

McMichael was a prominent player on the 1985 Chicago Bears defense, helping the Monsters of the Midway win Super Bowl 20. He was named first-team All-Pro twice and second-team All-Pro three times during his career, and is listed as one of the 100 Greatest Bears of all time.

Since revealing his diagnosis, McMichael decided he will no longer be in the public eye but is expected to attend the fundraiser.
