Cubs Beat Reds as Kris Bryant Hits Go-Ahead Home Run

Ian Happ also went deep for the Cubs, who split the four-game series with the Reds

It had all the makings of another rough day in Cincinnati, but Kris Bryant and the Chicago Cubs had other ideas as they scored a comeback win over the Reds on Sunday afternoon.

Bryant hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning of the contest, scoring Jason Heyward and Nicholas Castellanos to give the Cubs the lead. Ian Happ added an insurance run in the eighth inning, and that was enough as the Cubs finished off the comeback.

The win allowed the Cubs to split the four-game series with the Reds, and put them back at 64-54 on the regular season.

Heyward and Castellanos each had two hits in the game, as did Happ, and Javier Báez smacked an RBI double in the contest.

After a few shaky starts, Jon Lester had a decent day on the mound, giving up three runs in five innings of work. David Phelps and Rowan Wick threw three scoreless innings, and Pedro Strop nailed down the save in the ninth.

Eugenio Suárez smacked yet another home run, his 33rd of the season, but it wasn’t enough for the Reds as they had to settle for a series split.

The Reds did get off to a hot start offensively, with Joey Votto hitting an RBI double in the third inning and Aristides Aquino continuing his red-hot play with an RBI single to give Cincinnati a 2-0 lead after three innings of play.

After Suárez homered in the fifth, the Cubs started chipping away at the Cincinnati advantage. Báez smacked an RBI double to left field to score the Cubs’ first run in the sixth, and in the seventh inning Tony Kemp drove in Happ with an RBI groundout to make it 3-2.

With two runners on, Bryant blasted a home run deep to left field, giving the Cubs a 5-3 lead. Happ followed in the eighth with a homer of his own into the left field bleachers, and Strop slammed the door in the ninth to seal the victory.

The Cubs will now take Monday off before heading to Philadelphia for the start of a three-game series against the Phillies on Tuesday. José Quintana will pitch that game for the Cubs.
