Jonathan Lucroy Signs With Cubs, Will Bat 8th vs. Reds

Lucroy was designated for assignment by the Angels earlier this month

The Chicago Cubs have officially added another catcher to their roster, signing Jonathan Lucroy to a big league contract for the remainder of the season.

Lucroy, who was designated for assignment by the Angels earlier this season, will immediately jump into the Cubs’ lineup on Thursday night, playing catcher and batting eighth.

To clear room for Lucroy on the active roster, the Cubs have optioned catcher Taylor Davis to Triple-A Iowa.

The catcher had seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 74 games with the Angels this season before being designated for assignment in early August. He cleared waivers, which freed him up to sign with any team, and the Cubs immediately locked him up to a deal.

Lucroy will likely see plenty of action behind the plate with catcher Willson Contreras recovering from a strained hamstring. That injury landed Contreras on the 10-day injured list, but it’s unclear how long he will be out of action.

Lucroy will likely split time with Victor Caratini, who is putting up some of the best numbers of his career.
