The Chicago Cubs are busy making some important decisions about the construction of their 2020 roster, and the team has reportedly made one of those choices in regards to pitcher Cole Hamels.

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers and MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian, the Cubs have decided not to make a qualifying offer to Hamels, paving the way for him to become an unrestricted free agent.

If Hamels had accepted the offer, the Cubs would have paid him $17.8 million for the 2020 season. By not tendering him the offer, the Cubs will not receive a compensatory draft pick if he signs with another team.

Earlier Monday, the Cubs had officially announced that they had picked up the 2020 contract option on first baseman Anthony Rizzo, while declining options on pitchers Tony Barnette, Kendall Graveman, Derek Holland, Brandon Morrow, and David Phelps.

The Cubs also added pitcher Colin Rea to their 40-man roster, and outrighted pitcher Allen Webster to Triple-A Iowa.
