Cubs' Javy Báez Sidelined by Bruised Heel

Cubs shortstop Javy Báez could be out of the lineup through at least Tuesday after suffering a bruised heel running the bases during Sunday’s victory over the Diamondbacks.

“We didn’t know how serious it was [Sunday] night,” manager David Ross said. “Looks like he woke up this morning pretty sore. So he’ll be day-to-day.”

It’s not considered serious, and Báez could be back in the lineup by the end of this week’s four-game series against the Reds, which opened Monday. That would be just ahead of Friday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.

Báez, who was replaced at short by Nico Hoerner on Monday, hurt the foot when he hit first base awkwardly running out a grounder in the eighth inning Sunday. He remained in the game for the final half-inning and even made a sliding catch of a popup for the second out of the ninth.

Báez is hitting .242 with a .769 OPS and leads the team with 22 homers and 64 RBIs.
