Cubs' Javy Báez ‘Not Really Paying Attention' to Extension Likelihood

Báez ‘not really paying attention’ to extension likelihood originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

PHOENIX – Cubs shortstop Javy Báez voiced a familiar sentiment on a Zoom media conference Sunday when asked if he was optimistic about getting a contract extension done before the trade deadline.

“If anything happens, I’m ready, we’re here,” he said after the Cubs’ 6-4 loss at Arizona. “I think it’s time to focus, to get back in first place and get back on track to make the playoffs. I’m not really paying attention to that.”

Days earlier, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, another possible extension candidate, said something similar.

“With all that, I’ve said my piece on how I feel and how I love the city,” he told NBC Sports Chicago. “We’ve gone back and forth, but I just think that focusing on today right now is best for me, and I have no idea what’s going to happen 14 days from now. I have no idea what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

The Cubs won their first series out of the All-Star break, with back-to-back wins against the last-place Diamondbacks. But after Sunday’s loss, the Cubs sat nine games back of the NL Central-leading Brewers.

The Cubs’ trade-deadline selling began this past Thursday, when the club dealt veteran outfielder Joc Pederson to the Braves for a first base prospect.
