Cubs' Jason Heyward Returns From IL, Greg Deichmann Optioned

Heyward returns from IL, Deichmann optioned originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Cubs activated veteran outfielder Jason Heyward off the 10-day injured list on Sunday.

Heyward’s close-to-the-minimum IL stint for left index finger inflammation opened an opportunity for yet another MLB debut. Rookie Greg Deichmann, who the Cubs acquired from the A’s in the Andrew Chafin trade, replaced Heyward in right field.

Deichmann was the 11th Cubs player to make his MLB debut this season. The Cubs have used a franchise-record 59 players this season.

As the Cubs activated Heyward, they optioned Deichmann to Triple-A Iowa. In seven major-league games, Deichmann went 4-for-23 at the plate.

Heyward has put together a poor offensive season so far, batting .198. But before he landed on the IL, Heyward’s plate performance was trending upward, as he logged hits in four of his last five games.
