Cubs Interested in One of Top Free Agent Pitchers, Report Says

The Chicago Cubs have already added a couple of starting pitchers to their roster, but according to a new report, they may not be done yet.

According to CBS’ Bruce Levine, the Cubs are pursuing free agent pitcher Yu Darvish on the free agent market.

Darvish, along with former Cubs starter Jake Arrieta, are considered to be the top two free agent pitchers available, and as such he would cost a pretty penny to sign. Darvish went 10-12 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers last season, and he pitched well against the Cubs in the National League Championship Series.

Reports out of Japan earlier this week had indicated that the Cubs were pursuing Darvish, who just finished off a six-year contract that he had signed with the Rangers in 2012.

Darvish has seen his innings limited over the last few seasons due to injuries, as he underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2015 campaign. He only pitched 100 innings in 2016 as a result of injuries, but pitched 187 innings in 2017.

The Cubs have already signed pitcher Tyler Chatwood to a three-year deal worth $38 million, and also signed Drew Smyly to a two-year deal with a third-year option. Smyly underwent Tommy John surgery this year, and won’t be ready until late in the 2018 campaign.
