Cubs Lose to Cardinals, Leaving Magic Number at 1

The Chicago Cubs were unable to lock up the National League Central crown on Tuesday night, falling to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The loss, coupled with the Milwaukee Brewers' narrow win over the Cincinnati Reds, ensured that the Central race would continue for another day, with the Cubs getting another opportunity to clinch their second straight division title on Wednesday night in St. Louis.

The Cubs were down 8-3 in the eighth inning, but home runs from Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist narrowed the gap to just 8-7.

Anthony Rizzo ended up popping out to end the inning, and the Cubs couldn't plate another run as they fell just short of clinching the division at their rival's ballpark.

The Cubs can still clinch the division title on Wednesday night with a win against the Cardinals or with a Brewers loss to the Reds at Miller Park.
