Cubs Bench Coach Named New Manager of Nationals: Reports

The Chicago Cubs have another vacancy to fill, as one of Joe Maddon’s top lieutenants has accepted another job.

According to multiple reports, bench coach Dave Martinez will be the Washington Nationals’ new manager. Martinez, who has served as Maddon’s bench coach in both Tampa Bay and Chicago, will take over from Dusty Baker, who was fired following the team’s first round exit from the postseason.

According to reports, Martinez’s deal will be for three years, with a club option for a fourth year, and will be announced following the conclusion of the World Series. [[453650683, C]]

With Martinez’s departure, Maddon’s staff will be almost completely different for next season. Pitching coach Chris Bosio, hitting coach John Mallee, assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske, and third base coach Gary Jones are all gone after the team was bounced from the NLCS by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It’s unclear who will replace Martinez as Maddon’s top assistant, but several candidates have already been mentioned, including former Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, who also interviewed for the Nationals’ managerial position.

ESPN analyst and former Cubs player David Ross has long been considered a candidate to manage at some point, and the Cubs could look to him for a leadership role in the clubhouse.
