Cubs Beat Brewers as Heyward, Báez Power Offense

José Quintana allowed two runs in six innings of work

After a tough road trip, the Chicago Cubs got a taste of home cooking on Friday as they beat the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

Jason Heyward and Javier Báez both hit home runs in the game, and Willson Contreras and José Quintana both drove in runs as the Cubs bounced back from a 3-6 road trip with a victory.

Quintana also flourished on the mound, giving up two earned runs and striking out five batters in six innings of work.

Zach Davies took the loss for the Brewers, giving up four earned runs in four innings as Milwaukee failed to gain ground in the tight Central Division race.

The Cubs got on the board immediately in the first inning thanks to their lead-off man, as Heyward smacked a home run to right-center field to put Chicago ahead 1-0.

After Ryan Braun tied the game in the second with a solo home run of his own, the Cubs scored three runs in the third inning. Báez ripped his 26th home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead, and Quintana helped his own cause with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game after three innings.

The Cubs scratched out single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with both Contreras and Báez both collecting RBI fielder's choices as Chicago raced out to a 6-1 lead.

The Brewers weren't able to come back against the Cubs' bullpen, with Rowan Wick, Brandon Kintzler, and Kyle Ryan working three scoreless innings of relief to finish off the contest.

The Cubs and Brewers will square off again on Saturday afternoon, with Cole Hamels set to come off the injured list and make the start. First pitch is set for 1:20 p.m.
