The Chicago Cubs have made some massive changes to their coaching staff this season, but they’ll have at least a little bit of continuity as they made their decision on who will replace Dave Martinez as bench coach.

Martinez, who left the Cubs to become the new manager of the Washington Nationals, will be replaced by Brandon Hyde, the team confirmed on Thursday. Hyde, who was the team’s bench coach before Martinez arrived in Chicago in 2015, had been courted by the New York Mets to take the position with their team, but instead will remain with the Cubs.

2018 Free Agency: Cubs Hitting the Market

Hyde’s promotion is just the latest in a series of shake-ups to the team’s coaching staff. Chris Bosio, the team’s former pitching coach, was let go after the season, and is now the pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers. Assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske is now the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels, and several other coaches, including Gary Jones and former hitting coach John Mallee, remain free agents.

The Cubs are still looking for a first base coach to replace Hyde, but they’ve already made a slew of hires, including new pitching coach Jim Hickey and new hitting coach Chili Davis.
