Tempers flared at Guaranteed Rate Field on Wednesday afternoon as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3.
Shortstop Tim Anderson hit a two-run home run in the game, but was ejected in the sixth inning after he was beaned by Royals pitcher Brad Keller. Benches cleared after the incident, and both players were ejected, along with White Sox manager Rick Renteria.
Ultimately the Royals were able to prevail in extra innings, as Brian Dozier hit a solo home run into the White Sox bullpen in left field to lift the Royals to the victory.
White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito was forced to leave the game early because of a hamstring injury, and he is considered day-to-day.
Nate Jones ultimately took the loss for the White Sox, as he surrendered Dozier’s home run in the 10th inning. Wily Peralta got the win for the Royals.
The White Sox got on the board first in the fourth inning, as Anderson launched a two-run home run to left field to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. On the home run, Anderson threw his bat at the White Sox dugout in celebration, setting the stage for a later confrontation between the two clubs.
Alex Gordon tied the game back up in the top of the fifth inning when he hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Martin Maldonado and Chris Owings to knot things up at 2-2.
Chicago Baseball
In the bottom of the sixth, Anderson was leading off against Keller when he was plunked in the backside by a pitch. Anderson yelled at the mound, causing the benches to clear, and after several flare-ups both Anderson and Keller were ejected, along with Renteria.
The White Sox were unable to take advantage of a run-scoring chance in the frame, setting the stage for Kansas City to take back the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Dozier. Leury Carcía had an RBI single of his own in the eighth inning, scoring James McCann, but the White Sox could never quite get over the top as the Royals won in extra innings.
The Sox will now head to Detroit on Thursday to start a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers.
