Jose Abreu Shut Down for Season by White Sox

The Chicago White Sox will play their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, and they have decided to shut down one of their biggest stars before the contest.

White Sox G.M. Rick Hahn announced that first baseman Jose Abreu, who was recently hospitalized due to an infection in his leg, will be shut down for the remainder of the regular season. The team says that the ailment is healing, but not fast enough to get him back on the field before the campaign ends on Sunday afternoon.

Abreu has had an injury-plagued season, but still managed to hit 22 home runs and drove in 78 RBI for the rebuilding White Sox.

The team also announced that outfielder Avisail Garcia will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee after the season ends. Garcia hit 19 home runs, a career high, and drove in 48 RBI in 371 plate appearances this season for the White Sox.

Catcher Kevan Smith will also go under the knife during the offseason, as he will have a procedure done to his ankle. Smith had two home runs and 19 RBI in 178 plate appearances, and batted .288 for the White Sox.

The White Sox will play the Indians at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday night, and will wrap up their regular season with four games against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, including a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
