Chicago White Sox Pitcher Dylan Cease Gets Win in MLB Debut

Cease pitched five innings, giving up three earned runs in five innings

Chicago White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease had a debut to remember Wednesday, giving up three runs in five innings and earning his first career victory in a 7-5 triumph over the Detroit Tigers.

Cease struck out six batters and issued four walks in his major league debut, which came in the first game of a doubleheader at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Alex Colomé earned his 19th save of the season by getting the last out in the game, putting the White Sox just two games shy of a .500 record on the season.

James McCann drove in a pair of runs, and Ryan Cordell went 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the victory.

Cease struggled in the first inning, and he was victimized by the Tigers' offense early as Harold Castro drove in a pair of runs to put Detroit ahead 2-0.

Fortunately for the rookie, the team's offense picked him up, scoring runs in the first and second innings to tie things up at 2-2 as Cease settled into the game. Yolmer Sánchez looped a double into left field to give the Sox the lead in the fourth inning, and Cordell hit a sacrifice fly to put the Sox ahead 4-2 after four innings.

Jeimer Candelario homered to right field to bring the Tigers back within one, but the White Sox scored two more runs in the sixth inning, incluidng a sacrifice bunt by Cordell that scored Eloy Jiménez and made it a 6-3 game.

The Tigers made things interesting in the ninth as they scored a pair of runs off of Kelvin Herrera, but Colomé slammed the door and gave Cease the victory.

The two teams will re-convene at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday night for the second game of the doubleheader, as Ross Detwiler takes the ball in the nightcap.
