The Chicago Cubs may have lost on Friday night, but Tommy La Stella still managed to make it a historic night.
La Stella, who has been a pinch-hitting specialist for the Cubs all season long, registered a single in the team’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, his 21st pinch hit of the season.
According to Stats Inc., that total is a new Cubs franchise record, eclipsing the 20 hits that Dave Clark registered in 1997 and Thad Bosley had in 1985.
La Stella leads Major League Baseball in pinch-hits and pinch-hit RBI this season.
Unfortunately for La Stella, a baserunning blunder on his part ended up costing the Cubs, as they fell in extra innings to the Phillies.
