Cubs Still Considering Bringing Back Daniel Murphy, Report Says

Murphy hit six home runs after getting traded to the Cubs

Chicago Cubs infielder Daniel Murphy is set to become a free agent when the World Series ends, but according to a new report, could the team actually be considering keeping him around for 2019?

According to an interview Carrie Muskat conducted with Cubs President Theo Epstein, the option to keep Murphy around is still on the table, and his leadership is a big part of the reason why the team is considering offering him a new contract.

“I wouldn’t rule anything out,” he told Muskat. “Our guys loved talking hitting with him. It was a daily occurrence. We looked a lot better with him than without him.”

Murphy, who made $17.5 million last season in the final year of a three year contract he signed with the Washington Nationals in 2015, posted a .297 batting average and hit six home runs and drove in 13 RBI with the Cubs.
