Chicago Cubs Cough Up Lead, Lose to Mets

Michael Conforto and Jeff McNeil drove in late runs to lead the Mets to a win

The Chicago Cubs lost their lead late against the New York Mets and ultimately fell 5-4 at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon.

Michael Conforto blasted a solo home run to tie things up at 4-4 in the sixth, and Jeff McNeil smacked an RBI single in the seventh inning to lead the Mets to the victory, evening the series at one game apiece.

Addison Russell hit his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning, and Yu Darvish helped his own cause with an RBI single, but it wasn't enough as the Cubs' record dropped to 41-33 on the season.

Darvish gave up four runs in six innings of work, striking out six, but two home runs kept him from getting the victory. Brad Brach took the loss for the Cubs, giving up an earned run in the seventh inning of the contest.

The Mets got on the board in the second inning on a run-scoring double play, but the Cubs answered right back with a pair of runs. Albert Almora Jr. grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1, then Darvish singled to left field, scoring David Bote and giving the Cubs a 2-1 advantage.

McNeil smacked a home run to left field in the top of the third to tie things back up, but Russell did his best to play hero for the Cubs as he hit a two-run home run into the left field bleachers to put the Cubs ahead by two runs.

The Cubs couldn't retain the lead however, as Darvish surrendered a home run to Conforto in the next half inning to tie the game up. Mike Montgomery then gave up an RBI single to McNeil in the seventh, giving the Mets a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
