Smith had 180 saves in eight seasons with the Cubs

Former Chicago Cubs closer Lee Smith is heading to Cooperstown, as he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday night.

Smith, who spent eight seasons with the Cubs, was elected along with former White Sox outfielder Harold Baines on the Today’s Game Era ballot, the Hall announced on Sunday.

In eight seasons with Chicago, Smith posted a 2.92 ERA, racked up 180 saves, and struck out 644 batters. He was a big part of the Cubs’ 1984 National League East Division championship, helping the team to their first postseason appearance in nearly 40 years.

Smith played a total of 18 big league seasons, racking up 478 saves and striking out 1,251 batters in those seasons. He also spent four years with the cardinals, three years with the Red Sox, and two with the Angels, among other stops.
