Cubs' Anthony Rizzo Wins Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award

It appears Anthony Rizzo isn't just an inspiration to his fans, but to his fellow players as well.

The Chicago Cubs first baseman was selected Marvin Miller Man of the Year, a prestigious award given to the player who most inspires other players through on-field performances and contributions to his community.

"Thank you to all the @MLB_PLAYERS for this amazing honor," Rizzo wrote on Twitter in response. "We will continue to keep fighting and using our platform to make a difference."

A tweet from the Major League Baseball Players Association also quoted Rizzo in saying "to be associated with Marvin Miller is amazing for all he did..."

Rizzo was treated for limited state classical Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2008 and in 2012 founded the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, which funds pediatric cancer research and supports the families of children with cancer.

His latest accolade comes after Rizzo won the Roberto Clemente Award, given to players who excel on the field and embrace charitable endeavors away from the diamond.

Cancer patient Abby Schrage is spending weeks in the hospital with her family and favorite things by her side. When the 12-year-old’s prized autographed photo of Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo went missing Friday, hospital staff reached out to the his cancer foundation for a replacement. Natalie Martinez reports.

The Cubs star won the award as a result of his charitable efforts, including $3.5 million in donations to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

The award came with a $25,000 check, which Rizzo promptly donated to Puerto Rico hurricane relief efforts in honor of Clemente's charitable legacy.
